In a significant move to bolster the digital capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UAE, telecom provider du has launched a comprehensive digital transformation playbook in collaboration with Huawei UAE. Titled 'From Set Up to Set for Growth', this guide offers actionable insights for SMEs looking to improve cash flow, enhance payment experiences, and build operational resilience through the adoption of digital tools. The initiative is informed by a recent study that involved interviews with 648 SMEs across all seven emirates, revealing that while basic technology adoption is widespread, only 8% of these businesses have achieved advanced digital maturity.

The research highlights that while 77% of SMEs utilize point-of-sale systems and 81% employ computers, significant barriers remain for deeper digital integration. Among the challenges identified, 47% of respondents cited setup costs as the primary obstacle, followed by skills gaps at 45% and subscription costs at 37%. The playbook aims to address these issues not by advocating for new software purchases, but by guiding businesses on how to maximize the value of their existing technology. This includes strategies for centralizing customer data, streamlining digital payment processes, and implementing low-risk AI applications.

Currently, only 15% of SMEs surveyed are leveraging AI and analytics platforms, prompting the guide to recommend starting with simpler applications, such as automating routine tasks. Karim Benkirane, Chief Commercial Officer at du, emphasized the need for practical guidance, stating that while UAE SMEs have access to digital tools, many require a structured roadmap to fully realize their potential. Huawei's role in this initiative involves providing essential ICT infrastructure and solutions, including 5G and cloud services, to enhance du's offerings for SMEs.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step in addressing the digital transformation gap among SMEs in the UAE, which is crucial for the overall growth of the economy. By equipping these businesses with the necessary tools and knowledge, du and Huawei are not only fostering innovation but also enhancing the competitive landscape for SMEs in the region.
