Equipal, a fintech lender specializing in business equipment financing based in the UK, has successfully secured £16.25 million in funding from Altum Capital Management. This investment consists of a £1.25 million equity injection alongside a £15 million forward-flow facility, aimed at bolstering Equipal's growth within the UK asset finance market. The funding will also facilitate an increase in the company's workforce, expanding from its current size to approximately 12 employees over the next year. Eamonn McMahon, the founder and managing director of Equipal, emphasized that the structure of the deal not only allows for scalable senior funding in the future but also provides essential operational flexibility for the firm.

The forward-flow facility is structured in two distinct components: an initial full lease funding segment and a contingent junior tranche. This arrangement is particularly noteworthy as it combines equity and financing from a single institutional investor, a rarity in the current private credit landscape. Many smaller lending platforms have faced challenges in securing funding due to increased scrutiny from institutional investors following recent market volatility. Altum Capital, a regulated credit fund established in 2009, adopted a conservative approach to this transaction, incorporating credit enhancement measures and legal protections to mitigate risks.

Equipal's proprietary platform integrates directly at the point of sale, collaborating with over 75 equipment vendors across the UK to facilitate swift digital asset financing for purchases up to £250,000. The firm targets hard assets in sectors such as manufacturing, transport, and agriculture, offering financing terms of up to five years. Since its inception in 2021, Equipal has maintained a commendable credit track record, reporting a default rate of just 1.26% and zero credit losses to date, with a notable 69% of customers returning for additional financing.

As the UK asset finance market has historically been dominated by traditional lenders, Equipal's entry into this space with a digital approach represents a significant shift. The embedded finance model not only streamlines the purchasing process for equipment vendors but also positions Equipal favorably amid evolving regulatory scrutiny. Altum Capital's backing of Equipal in this context reflects a strategic credit decision, indicating confidence in the company's growth trajectory and the robustness of its vendor network. Stakeholders will be keenly observing Equipal's expansion pace, the utilization rate of the £15 million facility, and the potential for additional senior funding partners to join in the future.
