A recent report from PYMNTS highlights a pressing issue for financial services firms: the growing friction in identity verification processes as digital revenue streams expand. With 76% of these firms deriving at least three-quarters of their revenue from digital channels, the stakes are high. Inconsistent identity verification results and excessive checks not only hinder customer onboarding but also pose significant risks in terms of fraud prevention and overall customer satisfaction. The report underscores that while most firms express confidence in their KYC (Know Your Customer) and KYB (Know Your Business) processes, the digital landscape demands more than just adequate systems; it necessitates robust solutions that can effectively balance security with user experience.

The findings reveal that 74.6% of financial services firms experience inconsistent identity results, while 56.3% acknowledge that customers face friction due to excessive verification checks. Alarmingly, 76.1% of firms indicated that their identity processes limit their ability to expand into new markets or customer segments, with KYC/KYB failures costing the industry nearly $34 billion annually. As financial services increasingly rely on mobile apps and embedded products, the risks associated with synthetic identity fraud and account takeovers are escalating, making effective identity verification a critical business concern.

However, there is a silver lining. The report indicates that 92.3% of firms utilizing a global identification platform have found that KYC/KYB processes have improved over time. This suggests that advancements in identity verification technology can indeed streamline onboarding while enhancing security measures. Yet, a significant number of firms remain hesitant to overhaul their existing systems, with 23% rating their KYC/KYB processes as best in class. This confidence, while rooted in established workflows and trusted vendors, may hinder necessary adaptations to meet evolving digital demands. Ultimately, as the financial services sector becomes more digitized, the imperative to refine identity verification processes will only grow stronger, compelling firms to act swiftly to maintain competitive advantage.
