Menlo Ventures has announced the successful raising of $3 billion in new capital, marking a historic milestone for the firm in its 50-year history. This capital will be allocated to support AI-centric startups across various sectors, including enterprise, healthcare, and consumer markets. The firm underscored its early investment in Anthropic, which recently surpassed OpenAI to become the highest-valued frontier lab globally with a valuation of $965 billion. Menlo Ventures characterized its initial investment in Anthropic as a pivotal moment, recognizing the potential for another independent foundation model company in a market that many believed was already dominated by established players.

The firm’s investment journey with Anthropic began in 2023 when the company was still pre-product and pre-revenue. Menlo Ventures saw in Anthropic’s leadership, particularly co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei, a unique blend of technical expertise and a clear vision that could define a new category leader. This strategic partnership allowed Menlo Ventures to gain insights into the evolving AI landscape, which informed their broader investment strategy.

The newly raised capital will be distributed across two funds: Menlo Ventures XVII, aimed at seed and Series A startups, and Menlo Inflection IV, a growth fund targeting Series B and later-stage companies poised for significant growth. Notable past investments from Menlo Ventures include Uber, Roku, and Gilead Sciences, with Anthropic's anticipated IPO in 2026 projected to be the largest exit in the firm's history, potentially reaching a valuation of $1 trillion or more.
