Nium has announced its acquisition of Cypher, a move aimed at bolstering its role as a foundational layer for compliant money movement between fiat and digital assets. This strategic integration combines Nium's established cross-border payments infrastructure with Cypher's innovative non-custodial wallet and issuing capabilities. The acquisition is set to enable Nium to develop and scale products tailored for crypto-native users, all while maintaining the security and reliability that its global payments infrastructure is known for. The rising demand for card issuing and fiat-to-digital bridges from both consumer-oriented Web3 companies and traditional fintech firms has prompted this expansion, especially following Nium's recent launch of a stablecoin-backed issuing product and an extended payment network supporting stablecoin transactions.

Nium's CEO, Prajit Nanu, emphasized the company's commitment to facilitating swift and accurate money movement, regardless of the asset type or geographical boundaries. He stated that the acquisition of Cypher equips Nium with the necessary resources to accelerate its infrastructure development. Cypher's founder, Kuberan Marimuthu, along with his engineering team, will join Nium, further enhancing its capabilities in the burgeoning digital asset space. As part of the transition, Cypher's services are set to be phased out by September 6, marking a significant shift in its operational focus.

This acquisition follows Nium's recent partnership with Circle, which enables stablecoin settlements through its global payout infrastructure, allowing financial institutions to transact in Circle’s USDC stablecoin across more than 190 countries. Additionally, Nium's stablecoin card issuance platform, launched earlier this year, allows companies to issue spending cards linked to stablecoins, facilitating transactions at millions of merchant locations worldwide. This strategic move positions Nium at the forefront of the evolving fintech landscape, where the intersection of traditional finance and digital assets is increasingly becoming a focal point for innovation and investment.
