Revolut, the London-based fintech powerhouse, is gearing up to launch its digital banking services in South Africa by 2028, having submitted a license application to the South African Reserve Bank. This move marks a significant step into one of Africa's most promising banking markets, with the company poised to offer a zero-fee account and customized financial products upon receiving regulatory approval. The anticipation surrounding this launch is palpable, as evidenced by a burgeoning waitlist that has nearly reached 100,000 users. Jacques Meyer, CEO for South Africa, emphasized that the company is not merely chasing customer acquisition numbers but is committed to providing a transformative banking experience that enhances financial management for users. Revolut's entry into South Africa is part of a broader global expansion strategy, which also includes plans to penetrate the UAE and the wider Middle East and North Africa region. Currently, the fintech serves around 75 million users worldwide and is actively pursuing additional regulatory approvals, including a UK banking license and a pending application for a US banking charter. However, the South African market presents challenges, as it becomes increasingly competitive with established banks and new digital challengers like GoTyme Bank and Discovery Bank vying for market share in the no-fee segment. Retail giants such as Pepkor Holdings and Shoprite Holdings are also exploring opportunities in financial services, leveraging their extensive loyalty program data.
