Tembo, a fintech company based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has secured a Payment Service Provider license from the National Bank of Rwanda, marking a significant step in its expansion strategy across East Africa. Founded in 2020, Tembo specializes in developing payment infrastructure tailored for businesses rather than individual consumers, a model that addresses the pressing need for efficient payment solutions in the region. With this new license, Tembo aims to enhance its business-to-business payment services in Rwanda, a market that is increasingly demanding modern financial infrastructure to support international trade and digital commerce.

The company has already established a presence in seven African countries and has successfully processed over US$1 billion in transactions for more than 100 enterprise clients. Tembo collaborates with prominent financial institutions, including Ecobank and CRDB Bank, and integrates with popular mobile money networks such as M-Pesa and Airtel Money. This strategic positioning allows Tembo to facilitate seamless cross-border payments for businesses, addressing a critical gap in the African fintech landscape.

Victor Joseph, the Chief Executive of Tembo, emphasized the necessity for robust payment infrastructure in Africa, stating that the continent requires reliable payment rails to simplify the movement of money across borders. His comments reflect a broader sentiment in the fintech industry regarding the urgent need for foundational financial systems that can support the growing digital economy in Africa. With the demand for such services on the rise, Tembo's expansion into Rwanda is timely and positions the company to capitalize on the evolving financial ecosystem in the region.
