Terraxy, a deeptech startup based in Saudi Arabia and spun out from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), has successfully raised $3 million in a Seed funding round led by Wa'ed Ventures, the venture capital arm of Aramco. The round also saw participation from KAUST, underscoring the strong institutional backing for innovative solutions in the region. Founded in 2023 by Professor Himanshu Mishra and Dr. Adair Gallo, Terraxy is focused on developing advanced technologies aimed at regenerating degraded soils in arid environments and facilitating large-scale greening initiatives. Its flagship product, Carbosoil, is a proprietary soil enhancer that significantly improves water and nutrient retention, boasting the potential to increase plant growth and yields by up to 70% while utilizing the same amount of resources.
The newly acquired funds will enable Terraxy to transition from pilot-scale production to full industrial deployment, which includes plans for a 30,000-square-metre commercial facility in Al Zulfi, Saudi Arabia. This facility will play a crucial role in supporting extensive greening and land rehabilitation projects across the region. Beyond enhancing agricultural productivity, Terraxy's technology also offers long-term carbon sequestration capabilities, allowing atmospheric carbon dioxide to be stored in soils for centuries. This positions the company at the forefront of climate technology, resource efficiency, and environmental restoration.
